APART from focusing on academic studies, the LDS College in Tamavua, Suva, also has room for community projects for the less fortunate ones in society. And one such major project the school is presently working on is the production of rocket stoves. So far, the school has produced 30 stoves and it is working closely with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to identify the recipients of such equipment.

School principal Michael Carthew said they had a few projects in progress that involved the communities and students.

"For the rocket stoves, we are partnering with the ministry. These stoves are very efficient in burning and it produces less carbon and smoke," Mr Carthew said. "This is a sort of a step up to cooking in open fires as the stoves are much efficient, quicker and cleaner.

"We are producing these stoves for certain villages and communities and the ministry will look after the distribution part as well as the identification needs." Mr Carthew said this was the phase one of their rocket stove project.

"We have just started with this project and our aim is to produce about 20 in a month for the whole of this year. "We will expand the project if the need arises. We are working closely with the ministry on this project and for us, this is a win-win situation."
